Morna History

Students and staff at the original Morna Valley School

Morna's story began in 1973, when Mary Blakstad founded Morna Valley School to serve Ibiza's growing international community. At a time when the island was attracting families from around the world, the school embraced an open and creative approach to education, offering an innovative curriculum that reflected the spirit of the era.

During the early 1980s, ownership passed to John and Helen Tunks, under whose leadership the school continued to grow and establish its reputation as a welcoming international school.

In 1992, Helen Davenport acquired the school and oversaw one of the most significant milestones in its history. As pupil numbers increased, she relocated the school from its original home in San Carlos to a purpose-built campus in Santa Gertrudis, providing the facilities needed for the next stage of Morna's development.

The new campus opened in September 2004, marking the transition from Morna Valley School to Morna International College. This move laid the foundations for the modern school that families know today.

In 2006, the school was acquired by its current owner, who has continued to invest significantly in every aspect of school life. Continuous investment in outstanding teaching, modern facilities, specialist learning environments, technology and sports provision has transformed Morna into one of Spain's leading international schools.

Today, Morna International College is home to more than 620 students representing over 40 nationalities. As an accredited Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel examination centre, we are recognised for our outstanding academic standards, exceptional pastoral care and strong sense of community. Our students consistently achieve excellent examination results and go on to study at leading universities across the UK, Europe and around the world.

While the school has grown enormously over the past five decades, the values on which it was founded remain unchanged: a commitment to academic excellence, exceptional pastoral care, respect for every individual and a strong sense of community. We believe every child should be challenged, supported and inspired to achieve their full potential.

More than fifty years after opening its doors, Morna continues to look forward. We remain committed to providing an exceptional international education that prepares young people with the knowledge, confidence and character to thrive in an ever-changing world.
